NAIROBI, May 7 (Xinhua) A Chinese-built seaport in Kenya s coastal county of Lamu will receive its first ship on May 20, the Kenyan government has said.
China Communication Construction Company has completed construction of berth one of the country s second commercial port, while berths two and three will be completed by October, the National Treasury said in a statement on Thursday.
The Treasury said the construction of the first phase of the port, comprising three berths, started in 2015, while subsequent phases will be undertaken by the private sector under a public-private partnership framework and eventually result in 23 berths along its 10 km shore length.

A boat carrying assorted equipment for cargo handling and navigation has left Mombasa for Lamu as the government races against time to operationalise the new port.
The shoal-draft flat-bottomed boat loaded with the first set of equipment to be used at the Lamu Port left Mombasa Port’s berth number 20 to deliver the cargo as Kenya prepares to open the new facility’s doors on June 15 this year.
Sailing along the Kenyan waters, the special barge belonging to Comarco, a marine transportation and engineering company, and towed by a ship Mv Comarco Swift, is expected to arrive in Lamu on Tuesday.

Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has awarded a new Ksh17 billion highway project to a Chinese firm.
In a special ceremony hosted on Monday, April 19, KeNHA Director General Peter Mundinia signed a tender award to China Communication Construction Company.
The company received the Ksh17 billion tender for the construction of Lamu - Ijara - Garissa highway in a period of 36 months.
The company was directed to upgrade the highway, which is 196 kilometers long, to all-weather gravel standards.
