Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s ‘facilitate, not mediate’ role could be the key to solving the Afghan imbroglio

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization meeting of Foreign Ministers on Wednesday in Dushanbe, the Tajik capital, may have been an under-the-radar affair, but it did reveal the contours of the big picture ahead when it comes to Afghanistan.

Pakistan invites German businesses to invest in agriculture, energy

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Thursday invited companies based in Germany for making investments in fields of health, education, agriculture and power sector in the country and assured them of support and facilitation in improving the bilateral trade and economic relations.
In a meeting with the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, Minister for Finance and Revenue Shaukat Tarin said Pakistan and Germany enjoy close, amicable and multidimensional relations over the years.
“Both countries are keen to further strengthen business and economic linkages as well as people-to-people contact between the two countries,” Tarin said.

ISLAMABAD/BEIJING (Reuters) -Pakistan said on Thursday traces of explosives had been detected during an initial investigation into a bus blast that killed 13 people, including nine Chinese workers, and said a terrorist attack could not be ruled out as the cause of the incident.
Wednesday’s blast in northwest Pakistan sent the bus hurtling over a ravine. Beijing initially said it was a bomb attack but later backed away from the assertion and said it would send a team to help investigate.

But these days, after 80% of the river’s flow was diverted for hydropower, “we’re sweating while sitting there, even using an electric fan,” Hadieri, 70, a resident of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir capital, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
As Pakistan seeks new sources of green energy, officials are diverting rivers through tunnels to harness clean hydropower.
But the diversions are also causing a range of problems, from hotter urban temperatures to water shortages and sewage buildups in riverbeds once rushing with water.
