(MENAFN - Trend News Agency) A 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit the waters off the east coast of Japan s Honshu island at 10:07 p.m. Saturday Beijing Time, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC), Trend reports citing Xinhua.
The epicenter, with a depth of 50 km, was monitored at 37.70 degrees north latitude and 141.80 degrees east longitude, said the CENC.

A magnitude 4.9 earthquake near Hualien City, Hualien, Taiwan, was reported only 13 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 14 km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Sunday 10 January 2021 at 11:23 am local time. Just 24 minutes ago, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Hualien City, Hualien, Taiwan. The tremor was recorded late at night on Saturday 2 January 2021 at 10:26 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 24 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the China Earthquake Networks Center (CEIC), the first seismological agency to report it.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Hualien City (pop. 350,500) located 65 km from the epicenter, and Yilan (pop. 94,200) 91 km away.
