Is Free Public Transit an Idea Whose Time Has Come?

The debate over transportation equity has heated up, given the sharp change in transit-rider demographics once the COVID-19 pandemic took most whiter and wealthier riders off of buses and (especially) trains. Not everyone sees eye-to-eye on just what transportation equity means. But a growing number of social-justice activists, urbanists and even transit-industry professionals now argue that making transit free for all should be one of the tools used to make transportation more equitable. Kansas City, Missouri, got the conversation started at the end of 2019 when its city council voted to make the city’s bus system fare-free. Now some of the nation’s biggest transit agencies are wondering whether to make mass transit free for everyone, or at least a lot cheaper to ride than it is now.

Farmington removing six sets of traffic lights at intersections

The Farmington City Council voted unanimously during an April 28 meeting to proceed with the removal of traffic signals at six intersections. Those six intersections are not in compliance with the 2009 Manual for Uniform Traffic Control Devices, which are federal standards adopted by the city council. It is possible the traffic signals could remain if some parameters are met including if the change causes an increase of vehicle crashes in the area. FARMINGTON The City of Farmington has started the process of removing six sets of traffic signals across the city due to the traffic lights not meeting standards to keep operating.

On the interstates you are not supposed to cross a solid white line. In the city all the turn only lanes are wholly marked with solid white lines. Why are city turn lanes not marked with short dashed lines like the exit only lanes on the interstate? Is it any wonder you see so many people breaking the law on the interstates?”
