(Photo by Jeremy Hsieh/KTOO) At Sealaska’s upcoming annual meeting, five seats are in play on the corporation’s 13-member board, and candidates are seeking support from the more than 22,000 people holding shares. But one of the biggest contests will be how elections will be carried out in the future. Former Sealaska board member Ed Thomas says about a fifth of shareholders don’t have a particular candidate in mind, “but they still want to be supportive of Sealaska; there’s an opportunity to give their votes to the proxy holders to vote as they wish.”

Sealaska Heritage Institute undertakes project to digitize reel-to-reel recordings

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - After previously receiving a collection of recordings of Southeast Native Radio and other valuable programs in 2010, Sealaska Heritage Institute is moving forward with processing the recordings through a grant that supports the preservation of rare and unique audio. Southeast Native Radio was broadcasted by KTOO in Juneau from 1985 to 2001 and informed Alaskans about Native topics. Topics included politics, religion, subsistence, land claims, political movements, women’s issues, cultural survival, and language documentation. Also within the collection is a 13-part series on the history of the Alaska Native Brotherhood and Tlingit language segments from the annual program Live day.

NYO in Ketchikan rescheduled for May 22 and 23

Flyer via SHI Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The 2021 southern Native Youth Olympic Traditional Games have been rescheduled to May 22 and 23. They were postponed last week due to a COVID-19 outbreak in Ketchikan. The northern Traditional Games are scheduled for this weekend, May 8 and 9, in Juneau. Both events will be live-streamed on Sealaska Heritage Institute s YouTube channel and a special website set up for the event. More information is available on the SHI website.

(Photo by Adelyn Baxter/KTOO) The Native Youth Olympics Traditional Games consist of 10 events inspired by hunting and survival skills of the state’s Indigenous people. Sealaska Heritage Institute organizes the games in Southeast Alaska. The games were originally scheduled for this past weekend at Ketchikan High School. They were postponed after several attendees at a school-sponsored wrestling tournament tested positive for COVID-19, briefly shuttering the school. SHI says it has rescheduled the southern games for Saturday and Sunday, May 22 and 23 in Ketchikan. The Northern Regional Games are set to take place this weekend in Juneau. Organizers say all competitors will be screened and tested prior and during the competitions. Masks will be required.

(Klas Stolpe) Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The 2021 Native Youth Olympics Traditional Games will stream live from the Thunder Mountain High School gymnasium this Saturday and Sunday.   Juneau Native Youth Olympics coach Kyle Worl said the games are generally held each spring and normally feature teams from across the region and state and have even included teams from Canada and Arizona.   “The games are slimmed down this year and focused on more Southeast teams split into northern and southern events,” said Worl, a coordinator for the northern event in Juneau and for the southern event in Ketchikan, which has been rescheduled to May 22-23 due to a recent coronavirus concern there. “Safety is our biggest priority.
