Dec 17: Iowa reports 97 more COVID-19 deaths, 746 hospitalizations

(KTIV) - State health officials reported 1,973 new positive cases in Iowa between 10 a.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. Thursday, this according to the COVID-19 dashboard.  At 10 a.m. Wednesday, the Iowa Department of Public Health reported 260,237 total positive cases since the pandemic began. That number rose to 262,210 by 10 a.m. Thursday. The state s website says out of those who have tested positive, 204,840 have recovered, an increase of 4,061 since yesterday.  Over the last 24 hours, the state reported 97 additional deaths connected to COVID-19, bringing the state s death toll to 3,451. READ MORE:  Subtracting the number of recoveries (204,840) and the number of deaths (3,451) from the total number of confirmed cases (262,210) shows there are currently 53,919 active COVID-19 cases in Iowa.

SIOUX CITY Woodbury County is slated to receive 1,950 doses of Pfizer s COVID-19 vaccine in the next few days. Siouxland District Health Department Director Kevin Grieme made the long-awaited announcement of the vaccine s impending arrival Monday during a news conference at the Security Institute on Western Iowa Tech Community College s campus. He said health care workers staffing emergency rooms and treating hospitalized COVID-19 patients will be the first to be immunized.  What the community needs to understand is that simply within Woodbury County we have over 4,000 individuals that are employed in our health care businesses and companies, so we don t even have enough to meet half of the demand that s there, Grieme said. Our goal is to really address the needs of our health care population.

Siouxland District Health: Increased COVID-19 numbers may be due to Thanksgiving gatherings

SIOUX CITY The Siouxland District Health Department on Saturday reported that Woodbury County s COVID-19 positivity rate and the number of new infections increased during the past week, possibly a consequence of Thanksgiving gatherings.  The percentage of virus tests coming back positive in the county rose to 14.6 percent for the week ended Dec. 6, up 1.6 percent from the week prior, according to a weekly COVID-19 status report from Siouxland District Health. (The Iowa Department of Public Health has reported higher positivity rates for the county, though its data is calculated differently.) The total number of new infections for that week was a reported 487, up from the 423 reported in the week prior. The number of coronavirus tests conducted in both of those weeks declined somewhat from the over-4,000 that were being taken during each of the first three weeks of November.
