Minister of Finance Su Jain-rong (蘇建榮) yesterday urged investors to remain calm, calling declines in the local bourse on Monday and yesterday a common period of consolidation following last month’s recurrent rallies to record highs on the back of an economic boom.
The TAIEX yesterday shed 288.57 points, or 1.68 percent, to 16,933.78 on an unprecedented turnover of NT$664.2 billion (US$23.762 billion) amid panic selling by day traders, analysts said.

Taipei, May 3 (CNA) The National Stabilization Fund, which was established by the government to smooth out volatility in the local equity market, will continue to keep a close eye on possible risks in the market at a time of an escalation in the COVID-19 pandemic, Finance Minister Su Jain-rong (蘇建榮) said Monday.
On the sidelines of a hearing by the finance committee at the Legislative Yuan, Su told reporters that the stabilization fund has been closely watching market fluctuations by taking into account possible risks caused by the virus, which continues to ravage many countries around the world, particularly India.

Senators support Tsai
US senators Robert Menendez and James Inhofe, who cochair the US Senate Taiwan Caucus, on Tuesday sent joint letters to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Canadian Minister of National Defence Harjit Sajjan to express their support for awarding a prize to President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) at the Washington-based Halifax International Security Forum (HFX). Their support comes after Politico reported that the Canadian government allegedly warned the forum’s organizers that it would withdraw funding if they award Tsai the John McCain Prize for Leadership in Public Service during the forum’s annual summit in November. Pressed by Canadian lawmakers to comment on the matter, Trudeau on April 14 said that the Canadian “government has supported and provided funding to the Halifax Security Forum throughout our time in office, and the minister has participated every year and will continue to” do so.

Taipei, April 29 (CNA) The Ministry of Finance will increase the number of prizewinners for the March-April uniform invoice lottery exclusively for cloud receipt holders to encourage people to ask for cloud receipts when they shop, Finance Minister Su Jain-rong (蘇建榮) said Thursday.
Beginning with the March-April uniform invoice lottery draw, to be held May 25, the MOF will increase the number of cloud-based uniform invoice receipts eligible to win the NT$500 (US$17.94) prize from 600,000 to 1 million, Su said at a legislative session.
