We all have a part to play in building a healthier Philippines

(File Photo/ Manila Bulletin) The COVID-19 health emergency has been a wake-up call, laying bare human vulnerabilities. In the Philippines, where millions live below the poverty line, the highly infectious disease not only showed us the fragilities of our health systems but also worsened their state. With everyone still at the mercy of the pandemic, the burden health workers and frontliners carry grows heavier by the day. The passing of the Universal Health Care (UHC) Law from two years ago signaled hope for the sector. It amplified the efforts of the Department of Health (DOH) along with its attached agencies to provide Filipinos access to cost-effective, quality care. When the health crisis took place, the law was put to the test, emphasizing the need for more resilient healthcare in the Philippines.

Philippines $21M remdesivir buy a waste of money

Share The Philippines’ Department of Health purchased one billion pesos ($21 million) worth of remdesivir to treat Covid-19 patients. GILEAD SCIENCES INC Philippines’ $21M remdesivir buy a ‘waste of money’ Mon, 10 May 2021 Two Philippine House lawmakers on May 9 criticised the Department of Health (DoH) for buying one billion pesos ($21 million) worth of remdesivir even after the World Health Organisation (WHO) had rejected the use of the drug in Covid-19 treatment. Anakalusugan Representative Michael Defensor and House Deputy Speaker Lito Atienza also questioned the DoH’s decision to push through with the transaction, which they described as a waste of money. “We consider all new purchases of remdesivir as reckless and foolish spending in light of the WHO recommendation, and considering that [the] government is scrounging for money to buy more Covid-19 vaccines and pay for the 2,000-peso cash aid for every Filipino contemplated under the Bayanihan 3 bill,” Defens

Medical groups discourage use of Ivermectin for prevention, treatment of COVID-19

(AFP / MANILA BULLETIN) In a joint statement Wednesday night, May 6, HPAAC said claims by supporters that Ivermectin is effective and safe from side effects remain based on “low quality evidence.” Citing a report by the Philippine Society for Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (PSMID), HPAAC reiterated that “there is no strong, conclusive evidence to recommend Ivermectin” to COVID-19 patients. In April, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted special permits to six hospitals to use the anti-parasitic drug on COVID-19 patients. However, according to HPAAC, the permit “does not include the distribution of said medication outside of these hospitals.” This after Anakalusugan Party-list Rep. Mike Defensor and Sagip Party-list Rep. Rodante Marcoleta distributed Ivermectin capsules to residents of Quezon City last week.
