The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office closed out the holiday season giving away tons of toys and holiday meals to those in need throughout the county on Dec. 23.
Through Sheriff Steve Sikes’ Community outreach program, a 501C3 non-profit, individuals and community partners donated plenty of gifts and bicycles to give out to families.

Dr. Mark Allen Lewis, 63, was killed when his Cessna plane was discovered in the marsh in the vicinity of Carr’s Neck Road on Dec. 21.
According to Liberty County Sheriff Steve Sikes, he was a resident of McIntosh County.
Sikes said several members of the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office and Liberty County Fire Services waded through the woods and marsh waters to recover the body. Lewis was initially reported missing by family members shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday Dec. 20.

Several community leaders announced their retirements last week. During the Dec. 17 City of Hinesville Council meeting, Hinesville Police Chief Bill Kirkendall announced it would be his last meeting as Chief of Police. The same day at the County Commission meeting Liberty Emergency Management Agency Director Larry Logan’s retirement was announced. On Dec. 18, Donald Lovette was given a retirement celebration streamed on Facebook Live announcing his retirement from Liberty Regional Medical Center.
