Total cost of ownership for fleets grows more complex

Jan 29, 2021 There is complexity in estimating a residual value for vehicles when there is not yet any established track record for used battery electric and fuel cell trucks. Total cost of ownership math, even 10 or 20 years ago, was probably complicated enough. Fleets now considering alternatives like battery electric and hybrid electric tractors have to factor incentives and grants – not just for the truck, but for the electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE). In addition to the raw cost of the EVSE, there are new costs that may need to factor in for, like getting utility power to EVSE; maintaining and servicing the physical EVSE to keep it operating; maintaining the software for monitoring and efficiently managing the charging of the vehicles; training for all aspects of EVSE; maintaining relationships with the utility providers; maintaining compliance with the fine print in the grants and incentives; contingency costs to change software, connectors, utilities, etc.

West Coast fleets reap benefits of renewable diesel fuel

Jan 20, 2021 AM Transport wants to begin using renewable diesel as soon as supply becomes available to rural areas in Oregon. AM Transport Andy Owens wants to get four million gallons of renewable diesel (RD) to the Umpqua Valley in southwest Oregon. This would be enough to fuel his fleet, AM Transport, and two other trucking companies for a year. Owens is chief executive of Glendale, Ore.-based AM Transport and chairman of the Oregon Trucking Association. The others involved are a log hauler and wood chips transporter. RD is produced in refineries using feedstock that includes animal fats and vegetable oils. The low-carbon RD molecule is refined to the same ASTM D975 specifications and standards as conventional diesel fuel.

Why cap-and-invest? One strategy for carbon reduction

January 20, 2021 Successfully tackling our climate challenge will require a mix of policies that includes investment, emission standards, and more. One important question is: how do we account for the harms of carbon pollution in our economy and hold accountable those responsible for them? Doing this will require grappling with the serious legacy of environmental racism that exists in our society, the result of both intentional and unintentional policies enacted by governments and supported by advocates over the years. This article describes Climate Solutions approach to the Climate Commitment Act , Governor Inslee’s proposed cap-and-invest system, and other systems like it. There are other strong carbon policies under discussion this year, including a carbon fee, that we don’t discuss in this post.
