The news genre accounts for only 10% of the TV viewership but 100% of the controversy around who watches what. Why donât broadcasters of other genres complain?
Last week, a Mumbai court rejected the bail plea of Partho Dasgupta, former CEO, Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India. According to Live Law, a leading publication, Dasgupta had claimed in his application that he was only a BARC India employee and not a whole and sole (authority). He also said that the board of directors and a disciplinary committee were above him in the council.
Dasgupta was arrested by Mumbai Police for allegedly taking money from (Republic TV channel head) Arnab Goswami and manipulating the television measurement in a manner that suits the channel. This news made headlines in almost all the mainstream news channels.

The year 2020 should have had been a year of new normal for the broadcast sector in India. The rollout of the new tariff order 1.0 brought transparency and growth in distribution revenues in FY20. However, even as stakeholders were coming to terms with the new pricing regime, the outbreak of the pandemic and the subsequent lockdown directly impacted advertising revenues.
The television broadcast sector was included among essential services , but the complete cessation of television production, cancellations of live sporting events and also the interruption in scheduled advertisements pushed the industry towards a sharp decline nearing 80 per cent in ad revenues.

NEW DELHI: The broadcasting industry had already been reeling under the impact of the Covid2019 pandemic when the Mumbai police came down on it, hard. On 8 October 2020, Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh addressed a press conference about its investigation into an alleged scam involving the television audience measurement system.
The matter had come to light when ratings agency Hansa Services Pvt Ltd, a contractor of Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC), filed a complaint with the authorities, alleging that some TV channels had been manipulating their television rating points (TRPs). This had led to faulty calculations for advertisers and a major loss of revenue for stakeholders.
