Unleashing the UK s digital identity economy

Feb 05, 2021 Christine Horton The UK faces urgent challenges if the benefits of a secure and efficient digital identity protocol are not to be squandered. Critics are calling on the government to ensure the right technology, processes and standards are in place to unleash a new, effective and prosperous era of digital identity. Westminster has announced plans to “unlock the UK’s digital identity economy”. Proposals include updates to existing laws to enable digital identity to be used as widely as possible, alongside a new set of guiding principles for policy development. Digital infrastructure minister Matt Warman says the goal is to make it easier for people to prove their identity online to enable faster transactions. He believes digital identity “has the potential to add billions to our economy”.

Late-night music venues will go extinct this year, industry bosses warn

Nightclubs across the UK face going extinct this year, with 80 per cent unlikely to survive beyond this month, industry bosses have today claimed. In a stark warning, the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) said the UK was on the cusp of losing a cultural institution due to the impact of Covid on the late-night economy. Taking aim at the Government, the group claims ministers have failed to recognise the devastating impact of Covid restrictions on the industry and that nightclubs have been neglected in terms of support.  Industry chiefs including the owners of Halo in Bournemouth and Brighton s The Arch have now warned that hundreds of venues could be lost by the end of this month without the Government s help.

End of furlough scheme in three months could trigger wave of job losses

MORE than a tenth of eligible jobs in Dorset were furloughed at the end of December, new figures show. The Resolution Foundation think-tank say furloughing has helped protect incomes during the coronavirus pandemic, but warned its expected end in just three months could trigger a wave of job losses across the UK. Figures from HM Revenue and Customs show around 19,300 jobs were furloughed in Dorset as of December 31 – 12 per cent of all that were eligible. In the Bournemout, Christchurch and Poole area, 24,400 jobs were furloughed - 14 per cent of those eligible. Women in Dorset were slightly more likely to be furloughed than men, with a take-up rate of 13 per cent, compared to 12 per cent.

Self-employed workers have been hit hard by coronavirus over the last year or so and Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak launched the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS) in a bid to keep the community afloat. State spending has reached unprecedented levels as a result of the pandemic and in a review of tax reform, the IFS said targeting the self-employed could be beneficial.
