Europeans in UK worried about post Brexit rights About a third of Europeans residing in the UK do not trust British authorities to protect their post-Brexit rights, according to a survey by an official British Agency. According to the Independent Monitoring Authority for Citizens Rights Agreements (IMA), 30 percent of the 3,000 respondents to the survey said they were either very insecure or not confident that their rights would be protected. Of these, 44 percent fear being treated differently compared to the British, especially with regard to access to health, education, housing and social support, or not having recognized academic or professional qualifications.

It is the first survey by the IMA, which was set up in January under the withdrawal agreement to protect citizens’ rights to live, work and retire in the UK and their access to public services such as the NHS. Kathryn Chamberlain, the IMA chief executive, said there was work to be done on rebuilding trust among EU citizens. One survey respondent said they were afraid “the government would start treating us like second-class citizens”, while another said: “I believe complaining will change nothing”. Chamberlain said: “I would ask anyone who thinks they have experienced a breach of their rights to contact us so we can help to resolve the systemic issues.”
