LONDON (AP) - Riders for the app-based meal delivery platform Deliveroo held a strike in London Wednesday over pay and working conditions, part of a broader backlash against one of the U.K.’s biggest gig economy companies.
Scooter and bicycle delivery riders waving flags and red smoke flares rode through the streets of Central London. Socially distanced protests were also planned in York, Reading, Sheffield and Wolverhampton to demand fair pay, safety protections and basic workers’ rights.

Socially distanced protests were held in London, York, Sheffield, Reading and Wolverhampton. The Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) said its members are calling for decent pay as well as improved employment rights and safety protections. The union said supportive action was expected in Australia, France, the Netherlands, Ireland and Spain. The action follows recent campaigns by those in the gig economy to be classed as workers and so receive better pay and conditions. Unions won legal action recently against ride hailing firm Uber. Alex Marshall, president of the IWGB and a former bicycle courier, said: “Deliveroo presents a false choice between flexibility and basic rights but the Uber ruling showed that, here as well as abroad, workers can have both.

Some 400 UK Deliveroo riders are striking on Wednesday over better pay, conditions and rights.
The strike coincides with trading of Deliveroo s shares opening to retail investors.
Deliveroo rider Greg Howard said the firm has given empty broken promises since he began striking in 2019.
Around 400 Deliveroo riders are attending socially-distanced strikes on Wednesday across five UK locations to protest pay, working conditions, and basic workers rights.
The food-delivery firm offers restaurant food, groceries, and alcohol for delivery on demand via an app, and relies on a network of gig economy riders to ferry out supplies to its customers.
