Amendments to Electricity Balancing Rulebook

The Regulatory Authority for Energy has issued a decision amending the Electricity Balancing Rulebook and establishing measures aimed at ensuring its proper functioning and effective competition in the market. The amendments concern the setting of limits in the submission of offers for upward and downward energy balancing and the suspension of the possibility of balancing service providers submitting balancing electricity offers with negative prices.

RES become top energy source for Greece

Numbers are never wrong. And for the first time in Greece they show that Renewable Energy Sources (RES) were during the first quarter of 2021 the first source of energy, surpassing fossil fuels and lignite. In particular, green energy from wind and photovoltaic parks, together with the hydroelectric power, managed to dominate the country’s electricity generation mix to the tune of 49.13%. There were some small indications already from the previous year, when on June 8, 2020 not a single kilowatt hour was produced by burning lignite, after 70 years of “coal” domination in the Greek electricity production. It was preceded by a day without lignite in the largest energy region of the country, Western Macedonia on May 20, 2020. A few months later, on September 14, 2020, RES (wind and photovoltaic) covered 51% of electricity demand, and together with large hydroelectric plants covered 57% of daily electricity demand.

Longest and Deepest Alternating Current Cable Route Surveyed

Longest and Deepest Alternating Current Cable Route Surveyed - 02/02/2021 A two-person Astrolabe Engineering survey team using a single SP60 GNSS receiver recently completed the entire land and sea route for the world’s longest and deepest alternating current (AC) cable.   Linking the island of Crete to mainland Greece, the 174km-long interconnection, of which 132 kilometres are on the seabed, became fully functional last month. Connecting Megalopolis in central Peloponnese with Heraclion, the biggest city on the island, the cable is expected to meet more than a third of the island’s electrical power demand and enable the island to permanently close its most polluting power plants.
