How mining is destroying infrastructure, causing disaffection in Akwa Ibom

Some of government’s infrastructure affected by dredging and mining activities By Sun Apr 18 2021 Mining and dredging business in Akwa Ibom State is a source of income to the owners of the business, an employer of labour for many and also a major source of raw materials for construction of roads and bridges. Without dredging and mining activities in the state, it would probably have been difficult for the Akwa Ibom State Government to source for sand, a major raw material used for the building of roads and bridges that litter the state. County Durham: New community network rolls out across former coalfield

A NEW community network will roll out across the former Durham coalfield as part of the £7.25m regeneration programme at The Pitman’s Parliament. Inspired by the historic lodge system of the Durham Miners Association (DMA), the network aims to revitalise and promote coalfield culture, bringing former mining communities together to take pride in their heritage. Redhills – Durham Miners Hall recently secured £4.5million from The National Lottery Heritage Fund toward its restoration and renewal as a centre of culture, heritage and education. The DMA said it is determined that the renewal of its home will benefit former mining communities across the region.

Historic Durham Miners Hall receives £4 5m funding

The historic Redhills Durham Miners Hall building, known as Pitman’s Parliament, has received £4.5m of funding from the National Lottery, allowing a full restoration of the Grade II-listed building and modernisation of the facilities. Redhills, which was opened in 1915, is said to be in urgent need of repairs. An appeal for funding to preserve the building was initially launched by the Durham Miners Association (DMA) in November 2018. Apart from the grant by the National Lottery, Durham City Council will also provide £1.1m of funding toward the £7.25m restoration project. The DMA is raising the remaining £1.65m from trades unions and other supporters.
