Larry Cauchi has been appointed the new chairman of the Thornbury and District Branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL). Larry was in the RAF for 26 years and served in Germany, the Middle East and the USA as well as in the UK. After leaving the RAF, he moved to Rolls Royce Defence in Bristol and managed the operations desk providing technical support to Air Forces around the world. “It was almost pre-ordained that I would join the RAF, said Larry. My grandfather and two uncles were all military men and their stories influenced me as I was growing up.
Rolls-Royce and the U.K. Space Agency announced on Tuesday that they have signed a contract hoping to revolutionize space travel by building and using nuclear propulsion engines.
British space exploration could dramatically change as using a nuclear-powered engine could send British astronauts to Mars in just three or four months about half the usual time.
Nuclear power could also lead to deeper space exploration as research moves further into space and away from the sun, solar power isn t an option. Travel times could potentially also be significantly reduced. We believe there is a real niche UK capability in this area and this initiative can build on the strong UK nuclear network and supply chain, Dave Gordon, U.K. Senior Vice President at Rolls-Royce Defense, said in the press release.

Rolls-Royce and the UK Space Agency have signed an agreement to study the application of nuclear energy in space exploration. The first contract between the two organizations, the project will examine how nuclear energy can both power spacecraft and be used for deep-space propulsion.
As humanity becomes more of a spacefaring species, there is a growing need for power systems and propulsion engines that are closer in scale to their terrestrial counterparts. There s a limit to what can be done with chemical rockets and small robotic spacecraft operating in low-Earth orbit, and these limits are being very rapidly reached.
