Wildfires launch microbes into the air, which may pose health risks

10 hours ago As climate change brings more wildfires to the western United States, a rare fungal infection has also been on the rise. Valley fever is up more than sixfold in Arizona and California from 1998 to 2018, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Valley fever causes coughs, fevers and chest pain and can be deadly. The culprit fungi, members of the genus Coccidioides, thrive in soils in California and the desert Southwest. Firefighters are especially vulnerable to the disease. Wildfires appear to stir up and send the soil-loving fungi into the air, where they can enter people’s lungs.

Bottom-up is the way forward for nitrogen reduction at institutions

Nitrogen is an element basic for life plants need it, animals need it, it s in our DNA but when there s too much nitrogen in the environment, things can go haywire. On Cape Cod, excess nitrogen in estuaries and salt marshes can lead to algal blooms, fish kills, and degradation of the environment. In a study published in

Industrialised countries finance new coal-fired power plants in Asia on a grand scale - Sonnenseite

Industrialised countries finance new coal-fired power plants in Asia on a grand scale A new MCC study reveals the global capital flows behind the most important climate killer – and outlines counter strategies. The Paris Climate Agreement not only incorporates the temperature targets of 1.5 and 2 degrees as the maximum tolerated global heating, it also explicitly targets financial flows with the goal of making them “consistent with a pathway towards low greenhouse gas emissions”. Nevertheless, coal-fired power generation, which releases a particularly large volume of CO 2 and is still booming in Asia, is fuelled by substantial funding from western industrialised countries, in the form of loans, loan guarantees, or investments in corporate bonds and shares. The extent of these financial flows is now revealed in a study by the Berlin-based climate research institute MCC (Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change). The study ha

DeSmog Climate Change Facts The Scientific Consensus Most of us are not climate scientists, so we should refer to the experts. Expertise might be gained from a strong track record of publishing in reputable peer-reviewed journals or from working at a non-partisan institute or university. There are also multiple disciplines that have expertise in different areas, such as climate modeling, attribution, impacts, atmospheric physics, climatology, paleoclimatology, and oceanography. Finding the most appropriate expert is a crucial task for journalists. At least six independent and peer-reviewed studies from 2004 and 2016 have found that between 90 percent and 100 percent of scientists agree that climate change is real and caused by humans. A summary of these studies and their methods was published in 2016 in the academic journal Environmental Research Letters.
