Climate change winners may owe financial compensation to polluters

UOG gets federal grant for new water lab, classrooms for nurses

The University of Guam will receive $8.6 million in federal funding to build a new lab to help monitor the island’s aquifer and to build more classrooms for its School of Nursing, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. The Economic Development Administration grant, which must be locally matched by $1.7 million, is expected to create 243 jobs, according to the Commerce Department. “The damage caused by Typhoon Mangkhut in 2018 underscored the need for Guam to develop new capacity to protect its aquifer and to address a chronic shortage of health care workers,” said Dennis Alvord, acting assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development. “This EDA investment will provide the University of Guam the additional infrastructure it needs to support the territory’s economic growth and resilience to future disasters through research and training.”
