Gov. Gavin Newsom’s announcement about a full California reopening on June 15 didn’t scramble UC Riverside’s plans for fall 2021, but it threw in some hot sauce.
“It made us more progressive in our planning,” UCR Chancellor Kim A. Wilcox said. “If COVID-19 vaccinations continue to trend as they are, and if there isn’t a COVID-19 outbreak, campus will look more like ‘normal’ than we thought it would even a short time ago.”

Large industrial fire under control in Channelview area, company says employees safe and accounted for

According to the Fire Marshal s Office, the fire occurred at K-Solv, located at 1000 Lakeside Drive.
Mikie Sopccak, Director of Environmental Health Safety and Security for the K-Solv, said during a news conference Wednesday evening that a drum transfer was occurring there was an ignition source.
Sopccak couldn t say what type of chemicals were ignited or what burned during the large fire.
Sopccak said that 56 employees, 5 of which were located at the warehouse where the fire occurred, were all accounted for.

The Harris County Fire Marshal s Office said numerous agencies responded with foam to extinguish the fire. Known chemiclas on site include, but not limited to: hydrochloric acid, acetone, ethanol, ethlyene dichloride, and other acids.
Lewis brings decades of experience in public safety and higher education to UConn

Gerald Lewis Jr., chief of police and associate vice president of public safety at The University of Texas at San Antonio, has been selected as the next chief of police at the UConn Police Department, President Thomas C. Katsouleas announced Wednesday.
Lewis has three decades’ worth of deep roots in public safety, including 26 years in the New Jersey State Police and two years as chief of the East Carolina University Police Department before moving to UTSA in 2016.
Lewis was selected after a highly competitive nationwide search for the UConn police chief position, in which he will lead 100 sworn police officers assigned to seven campuses across the state. He will begin at UConn on July 1.
