Health Dept. has discounted radon home test kits for National Air Quality Awareness Week Henry County Health Department The Environmental Health Division of the Henry and Stark County Health Department announces that May 3-7, 2021 has been proclaimed National Air Quality Awareness Week.  This designation helps to call attention to the fact that radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer overall and the leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers. Therefore, the Department reminds residents they have Radon Home Test kits available for purchase through their offices in Kewanee and Colona.  The kits are being offered at the low cost of $15 per kit.

Former Falk Road landfill to be discussed

 The Michigan PFAS Action Response Team (MPART) will provide an update on the investigation into the former Falk Road landfill in Holly Township on Monday, May 10.  Representatives from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) will host the virtual community meeting at 6 p.m.  The meeting is planned as an online event, rather than an in-person meeting, to comply with current state measures designed to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus.  To register for and participate in the online meeting, visit the registration website bit.ly/3nfvZfN.

Major projects at Ballina, Lennox Head face months of delays

Premium Content Subscriber only Two major building projects in the Ballina Shire could face months of delays after Aboriginal artefacts were found. Upgrade works at Ross Park in Lennox Head and Shaws Bay in Ballina have been put on hold due to separate discoveries. At the latest council meeting, on April 22, Councillor Sharon Cadwallader asked Matthew Wood, council’s director of Planning and Environmental Health Division, about the future of the projects. She asked why $150,000 of expenditure at Ross Park was delayed to next financial year. “Am I right to assume that this is Aboriginal cultural heritage hold ups?” she asked.
