Generation and transformation: Bringing cooperative G&Ts into the clean energy future

Published May 13, 2021 Catherine Morehouse, Utility Dive The following is a contributed article by Jeremy Fisher, Senior Advisor for Strategic Research and Development, Environmental Law Program, The Sierra Club Rural electric cooperatives hold a unique place in the U.S. electric sector. Authorized under the Rural Electrification Act (REA) of 1936, the formation of non-profit electric cooperatives is a lasting legacy of the last New Deal. Unfortunately, federal support of these cooperatives has not kept up with the times, and today rural utilities hold a disproportionate amount of uneconomic coal in the United States. With that in mind, we ve put a proposal on the table to use federal dollars to ease the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy at cooperatives and coal communities by injecting $12.5 billion of clean energy dollars into rural economies, with an additional $2.5 billion for plant and coal mine communitie

PJM proposes to end FERC MOPR policy that raised prices for state-subsidized resources

Dive Brief: The PJM Interconnection is proposing to eliminate a controversial rule that effectively raises the price for state-subsidized resources, such as renewables and nuclear, bidding into its wholesale capacity market. The grid operator on Wednesday laid out its proposal in an hours-long call with stakeholders, explaining that under its plan, the minimum offer price rule (MOPR) expanded through a 2019 Federal Energy Regulatory Commission ruling that attempted to combat price suppression in the capacity market would no longer apply to state-subsidized resources. Clean energy advocates praised the move as a win for state decarbonization goals. PJM s proposal is in response to a series of FERC technical conferences focused on the future of wholesale power markets. Some competitive generators, including Calpine which led the initial complaint that prompted the expanded MOPR on Tuesday argued in comments before FERC that the ruling remained appropriate and should not be

Challenging EPA s New FOIA Rule, Suit Seeks to Stop Trump s Shameful Attempt to Keep Americans in the Dark

DeSmog A new lawsuit seeks to kill a recent Trump administration rule that critics say deals a blow to transparency by giving the Environmental Protection Agency broad authority to shoot down public information requests. The new rule  put in place without public input was published on the Federal Register June 26 and goes into effect July 26. “This rule is a shameful attempt to keep Americans in the dark about the Trump administration’s sickening failures to protect our air, water, and wildlife,” said Meg Townsend, open government attorney with the Center for Biological Diversity. “We have a right to know what EPA is trying to hide and which Trump appointee is trying to hide it.”

Harvard s climate action plan

neutral by 2026 By 2026 we will prioritize aggressive reductions of our campus energy use and strive to offset or neutralize any remaining greenhouse gas emissions by investing in off-campus projects such as renewable energy. Harvard will engage its researchers and industry climate leaders to identify and, where feasible, invest in projects that credibly reduce emissions while providing other positive benefits for human health, social equity, and ecosystem health. As part of our climate strategy, our facilities leaders and building managers aggressively pursue energy efficiency. Explore our progress How are we addressing Scope 3 emissions? We are continuing our work to track and quantify the fossil fuel emissions associated with our supply chain for purchased goods or services that support campus operations. Once the magnitude of these so-called Scope 3 emissions are better known for areas such as food, air travel, and commuting, the University will set targets fo
