Local journalists under pressure
The work of local journalists is extremely important for Indigenous communities, said Kathrin Wessendorf, head of the International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs (IWGIA). Each Indigenous community has its own language, and only community reporters can report in that language, she told DW. They also know how best to approach the community to spread the message.
Patricia Gualinga, who fights for Indigenous rights in Ecuador, told DW that large national media networks are often slow to report on environmental and human rights issues. It s really very difficult to get coverage on TV. And if an issue isn t reported by the media, it doesn t exist, she said.

Monte Harris: We are at a crossroads in Oregon, and unless a lot more people become involved, we are going to start losing a lot of trees to ivy
With Earth Day 2021 less than two weeks away, it feels like there is more of a sense of hope this year as we all get vaccinated. Last year everything we had known as normal was taken away. Some things are starting to return to semi-normal, while some of the harsh realities remain.
The climate is still getting warmer and drier in the Pacific Northwest each year. The effects of climate change last year were very apparent. There were over 30 named hurricanes and cyclones, more than twice the usual number. We saw a catastrophic fire season on the West Coast like has never been seen before, with so much devastation to our forests, families, homes and legacies.

Canadian Youth Climate Leaders. From davidsuzuki.org
One of the Earth’s most precious resources are youth leaders from many countries who are mobilizing to vocally share their demands regarding climate change. This diverse group includes Indigenous climate activists, who are rallying and protesting for their very survival and cultural future. “Indigenous” means produced, growing, living, or occurring natively or naturally in a particular region or environments. It also means innate or inborn. Whether one is newly immigrated to a given region or has lived there for generations, being indigenous as a youth climate activist means caring deeply about the future survival of the place, peoples, and species as interdependent aspects of nature.
