THE DEPARTMENT of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said over the weekend that it has achieved its full target of closing down 335 open dumpsites across the country.
Open dumps are places where solid waste is deposited without further planning or consideration for environment or health standards. Under the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, these are considered illegal and should have been phased out by Feb. 2006.
“This is a victory for the environment and the DENR. Despite the limitations brought about by the pandemic, our people never wavered in their sworn duty as public servants to get the job done,” DENR Secretary Roy A. Cimatu said in a statement on Sunday.

The turnover of the units–made possible through the office of Senator Cynthia A. Villar–is expected to help address the solid waste problem in Manila Bay. Each unit costs P1 million.
“This is a huge help to LGUs to comply with the provisions of Republic Act (RA) 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000. It is anchored on the support Senator Villar has been giving to us in the DENR,” Undersecretary for Solid Waste Management and Local Government Units Concerns Benny D. Antiporda said in a statement Tuesday, May 11.
Antiporda, who also sits as the Manila Bay Anti-Pollution Task Force (MBAPTF) chief, said the move “raises the call for effective solid waste management as a major concern in the country’s discourse on governance, both at the national and local level”.

+ April 25, 2021 CENTRAL Luzon produces more than 5,000 tons of garbage, including agricultural, industrial, medical, and domestic wastes, according to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
This figure is collected daily in seven provinces and two cities but only 12 sanitary landfills exist to accommodate these wastes.
The garbage also included recyclables and non-biodegradable materials.
Residual waste is common in open dumpsites, which is the subject of complaints due to health hazards and foul smell, said Andresito Cabalar of the Solid Waste Management Office of the DENR-Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) in Central Luzon. It s the reason why our office has to shut down open dumpsite due to pollution and violation of the Ecological and Solid Waste Management Act, Cabalar added.
April 23, 2021 SINCE the start of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic, Davao City generated around 600 tons of garbage per day, according to the Davao City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro).
Cenro head Marivic Reyes said the city s average volume of collected garbage is around 600 to 650 tons per day since the Covid-19 pandemic hit the city in March 2020 until present.
For March 2021, the city recorded an average of 620 tons.
However, this does not include those collected by Ancillary Service Unit during its cleanup drive in canals.
The figure is slightly lower compared to the average 900 tons of garbage per day in 2019, during pre-pandemic.
