Pip Robson says farmers should view the reduction in subsidies as a real opportunity
A Northumberland grower says he wants farming to stand on its own two feet as the industry could be much better off without subsidies.
Pip Robson, who runs a mixed farm of 800 hectares, said farmers should view the reduction in direct payments as a real opportunity .
The grower made the comments after he joined AHDB s Monitor Farm Network in the North East, where he will share the way he runs his business with other farmers.
He explained that it was important for the industry to be self-sufficient and not rely on support payments.
AMENDEMENT: Tim Farron calls for changes to Famring Bill CUMBRIAN MP Tim Farron has tabled an amendment to the Government’s Environment Bill to adequately reward farmers for maintaining Britain’s beautiful landscape in places like the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. Mr Farron’s amendment would change the new payment scheme for farmers – the Environmental Land Management Scheme – to directly give financial support to farmers who deliver benefits to the landscape. Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Farron warned that farmers currently only get paid “a pittance” for maintaining the landscape and that the effect of more closures of family farms will devastating for both environment and the economy in Cumbria.
