On Wednesday, an EPA spokesperson said the Dong Won 701 had now been certified for dumping. “Following a review of consent conditions, the Environmental Protection Authority has certified the Dong Won has been cleaned and prepared in accordance with the requirements of its conditions.” PrimePort’s Te Maru tug boat is towing the vessel to the dumping site. Efforts to scrap the ship has been a three-year saga filled with delays and asbestos problems that had to be resolved to make the fire-damaged fishing trawler environmentally safe to dump.

The Dong Won 701 was towed from Timaru by PrimePort’s Te Maru tug boat.
The scuttling of the Dong Won 701 was delayed due to the presence of asbestos on board. “Following a review of consent conditions, the Environmental Protection Authority has certified the Dong Won has been cleaned and prepared in accordance with the requirements of its conditions.” The vessel would now be scuttled at an EPA approved site 25 nautical miles south-east of Otago Harbour, they said. The Authority could not confirm when the scuttling would happen, referring further questions to the vessel s owner DW New Zealand (DWNZ). A DWNZ spokeswoman said the company had no comment to make on the matter.
