Lawsuit Launched to Reverse Trump Administration Denial of Endangered Species Protection to West Coast Fishers
Rare Forest Carnivores Are Threatened by Logging, Fire, Poisoning
PORTLAND,
Ore. Conservation groups filed a formal notice today of their intent to sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service over its denial of Endangered Species Act protection to the majority of fishers on the West Coast.
Relatives of minks and otters, West Coast fishers once roamed forests from British Columbia to Southern California. Fishers throughout the West Coast range continue to face threats from intense logging, increased fire related to climate change and the use of toxic rodenticides by marijuana growers, which has caused a decline in their populations.
Press release from the Environmental Protection Information Center:
In response to news from Nordic Aquafarms and Humboldt County that the
county will pursue a full environmental impact report for the proposed fish farm, a coalition of
North Coast environmental organizations thank the company and county for listening to
community concern and their commitment to rigorous environmental review.
“Our organizations called for the preparation of an environmental impact report because we
believed that this project which is unlike anything seen before in Humboldt County or even the
state of California could benefit from more thorough environmental impact review and public
participation,” said Jennifer Kalt, director of Humboldt Baykeeper.

The Fish and Wildlife Service has denied federal protections to three salamander species, including the Shasta salamander, that environmentalists fear could be endangered by a California dam project. John P Clare/Flickr
The Fish and Wildlife Service said today it will deny federal protections to three salamander species that environmentalists fear could be put in danger by a proposed California dam project.
Pressed by a lawsuit to make a decision, the federal agency concluded the Shasta salamander, Samwel Shasta salamander and Wintu Shasta salamander don t need to be listed under the Endangered Species Act even if plans proceed to expand the Shasta Dam by raising it.
