On Earth Day, AG Healey Joins Community Leaders to Announce New Springfield Air Quality Monitoring Project

BOSTON On Earth Day, Attorney General Maura Healey joined local elected officials and community leaders in Springfield to launch a new collaborative air quality monitoring project to measure air pollution levels and provide data to inform public health responses in the city known as having the highest rates of asthma in the country. Today’s announcement was made at an event in Adams Park in Springfield and is part of AG Healey’s work to prioritize protecting public health in environmental justice communities in Massachusetts. AG Healey also joined members of her Environmental Protection Division to plant trees – two Musashino Zelkova and three Heritage River Birch – in the park.  

Wakefield Oil Tank Removal Company Settles Allegations of Hazardous Waste Violations and Illegal Asbestos Removal

BOSTON A Wakefield-based oil tank installation, maintenance, and removal company will pay up to $250,000 and will complete proper closure of an unpermitted well to resolve alleged hazardous waste and ground water discharge violations at its Wakefield headquarters and alleged illegal asbestos removal violations at an occupied building in Boston, Attorney General Maura Healey announced today. “We depend on companies to honestly and accurately report on their handling of hazardous materials to protect the health and safety of workers, the public, and the environment,” said AG Healey. “This settlement requires this company to address any potential environmental contamination and ensures that it abides by our important environmental laws moving forward.”

Georgia environmentalists score scrappy Capitol win on trust funds

Georgia Recorder Advocates built a replica of the Gold Dome out of scrap tires a few years ago and called it the scrapitol as part of a years-long push to pressure lawmakers to dedicate the scrap tire fee Georgians pay when they buy new tires to its intended purpose. Joe Cook/Coosa River Basin Initiative Environmental advocates rounded up 500 scrap tires and set to work building a rubber replica of the Gold Dome in the shadow of the real thing as the 2017 legislative session was underway. It was christened the “scrapitol,” complete with painted gold tires sitting atop the carefully constructed mound that conjured up images of the haphazardly dumped eyesores found on roadsides, in woods and elsewhere across the state.

Sierra Club Challenging Plan To Charge Georgia Power Customers For Coal Ash Cleanup

The Sierra Club filed an appeal Friday to a court decision upholding Georgia Power Co.’s plan to collect from customers $525 million in coal ash pond closure costs. The state Public Service Commission (PSC) gave the Atlanta-based utility permission to pass along those costs as part of Georgia Power’s 2019 rate case.
