Unter den Top Fünf der unterschätzten, aber gravierenden Umweltgefahren befindet sich laut UN-Umweltprogramm der tauende Permafrost. Seine Verbreitung ist zwar eingeschränkt, doch sind Permafrostböden einmal abgetaut, hat das verheerende globale Konsequenzen: Forschende gehen davon aus, dass ein Drittel des globalen Kohlenstoffs allein in den Böden der Arktis gespeichert ist. Wenn auch nur ein Teil davon in Form von Kohlenstoffdioxid (CO2) und Methan (CH4) freigesetzt wird, sorgt das für eine beträchtliche Verstärkung des Treibhauseffekts.
