Minister advised to turn the tap off on tourism grants

Tourism Minister Stuart Nash is being advised to stop providing direct financial support to tourism businesses.. It also reveals that a suggestion to stimulate domestic tourism by phasing school holidays was rejected by Education Minister Chris Hipkins earlier this year. The briefing says greater use of user charges, targetted taxes and levies on visitors would help pay the costs of tourism. It notes that the past the private sector has been able to reap tourism benefits while ratepayers and taxpayers met infrastructure costs. After a long and at times uncertain lead up, the America s Cup World Series regatta starts this week with four teams competing for their chance to race for sailing s most coveted trophy. Today teams and their families gathered at Auckland s Viaduct Harbour for a dawn ceremony followed by the official opening of the race village. Several hundred people gathered for the official opening with Auckland s clear blue sky and sparkling harbour as the backdrop. Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei blessed the village and welcomed the overseas challengers of the cup with a pōwhiri and karakia. Three challenger teams are taking part as well as defender Team New Zealand, with racing due to begin on Thursday.

Government has no plans to issue vouchers for domestic travel, tourism minister says

Supplied Tourism Industry Aotearoa suggested to the Government that in its first 100 days it should give every New Zealander a $200 travel card. An international airline lobby group, which includes Air New Zealand as a member, is calling on governments to give their citizens vouchers to spend on travel as a way to boost domestic tourism. The International Air Transport Association (Iata) has identified five ways that governments can help stimulate air travel, which is facing projected global losses of US$39 billion (NZ$55b) in 2021. The initiatives include waiving government charges, taxes and fees to airlines and passengers, route subsidies for domestic flights, financial incentives to airlines for operating flights, advance ticket purchases by governments that can be used for official travel or distributed to the public, and passenger travel subsidies in the form of vouchers for passengers or as a percentage cash-back on overall travel costs.
