So when Tourism Minister Stuart Nash’s “new look tourism sector” speech in Queenstown last month said regions need to diversify, so they are not so reliant on tourism, it would be fair to say his idea went down like a lead balloon with tourism operators in Te Anau and Fiordland. Speaking to some tourism operators in Te Anau, you get the impression Nash may not be welcome back anytime soon. Many feel the Government has not done enough to help them, and now to be told the region needs to perhaps diversify away from tourism, they feel like they have been thrown under the bus.

Local Government New Zealand welcomes the long overdue
review of self-contained freedom camping rules announced by
Tourism Minister Stuart Nash today.
“Many councils
across the country welcome the contribution freedom campers
make to local economies,” said LGNZ President Stuart
Crosby. “However, since the National-led Government
changed the legislation to enable freedom camping for the
2011 Rugby World Cup, we’ve been struggling to manage the
impact some campers have on the environment and council
budgets.”

Tourism Industry Aotearoa supports Government efforts to
further improve the management of freedom camping in New
Zealand but says the proposals must be fully tested and
assessed.
TIA will make a detailed submission in
response to the discussion
document released by Tourism Minister Stuart Nash
today.
“The tourism industry has done a lot of
thoughtful research and policy development on this issue
already, and we are looking forward to working further with
the Government. We hope to be able to reach agreement on
solutions that will stop the debate on how to manage freedom
