The History of the Labour Party | History Today

The History of the Labour Party Keith Laybourn traces the emergence of the Labour Party, its highs and lows and wonders if its forward march is now halted. Ever since the Labour Party was formed as the Labour Representation Committee in 1900 it has been at the centre of intellectual and political debate. Writings on the Labour Party have been driven by two central questions: first, why did the Labour Party emerge in the early 20th century to replace the Liberal Party as the progressive party in British politics? Second, has the forward march of Labour been halted? The second of these has particular relevance since the recent election of Jeremy Corbyn as Labour’s leader, which  has rekindled divisive conflicts between Old and New Labour.

Mark Millar on Jupiter s Legacy and Netflix

The Skinny Mark Millar on Jupiter s Legacy, Millarworld & Netflix Mark Millar sold his Glasgow-based comic book empire Millarworld to Netflix in 2017 – and he couldn t be more chuffed about it. We speak to him ahead of the release of the first Millarworld/Netflix production, Jupiter s Legacy Feature by Jamie Dunn | 07 May 2021 When I last interviewed Scottish comic book writer Mark Millar, in 2011, I asked if he thought comic book movies were running out of steam. After all, that year’s slate of superhero flicks didn’t include icons like Batman, Superman or Spider-Man. Former Obama administration official arrested on charges of charter school embezzlement

Former Obama administration official arrested on charges of charter school embezzlement Seth Andrew, a senior advisor to former President Barack Obama in the Office of Education Technology, was arrested last Tuesday on charges he stole more than $200,000 from Democracy Prep Public Schools, a network of charter schools he founded in 2005. Andrew is accused of stealing the amount to obtain a lower interest rate on his $2 million Manhattan apartment. Accusations include one count each of wire fraud, money laundering and making a false statement to a bank. Through his lawyer, Andrew has pleaded not guilty to the charges, which carry maximum penalties ranging from 20 to 30 years in prison. He was released on bail after the arrest.

The sentencing of Bernard Madoff

The sentencing of Bernard Madoff Bernard Madoff died in prison on April 14 at the age of 82. We are republishing this article, originally published in 2009, which noted that Madoff s sentencing was an effort to separate the Ponzi scheme operator from Wall Street counterparts whose financial manipulations were even more destructive. None of those counterparts were ever criminally prosecuted for their role in the 2008 financial crisis.  Financier Bernard Madoff was sentenced Monday to 150 years in prison for operating one of the biggest fraud schemes in history. Federal District Judge Denny Chin acknowledged that giving such a sentence to a 71-year-old man was purely symbolic, but declared, “The message must be sent that Mr. Madoff’s crimes were extraordinarily evil.”
