ECWA urges FG to address bishop’s concerns
By John Shiklam
The Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Matthew Kukah, has rebutted allegation that he called for a coup against the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari in his Christmas homily.
Kukah, who has come under fire from the federal government and its supporters, said his homily was his personal view “based on evidence.”
However, the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), which backed the bishop, has asked the federal government to address concerns raised by him rather than intimidating and sponsoring attacks on Kukah.
Kukah, in his Christmas message, titled: ‘A nation in search of vindication,’ delivered last Friday, had accused Buhari of sacrificing the dreams of Nigerians to institutionalise northern hegemony.
The Evangelical Church Winning All, ECWA, has warned that President Muhammadu Buhari would be held responsible if anything happens to the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah over his Christmas message on the state of the nation.
ECWA’s General Secretary, Rev. Yunusa Sabo Nmadu Jnr was responding to the call for Kukah’s arrest.
Following Kukah’s Christmas message, the Arewa Consultative Youths Forum, AYCF, had called for the arrest and prosecution of the clergyman.
National President of AYCF, Yerima Shettima had said Kukah should be arrested and prosecuted for committing treasonable felony.
However, Nmadu described the call for Kukah’s arrest as a joke, stressing that the Catholic Bishop spoke the mind of Nigerians.

Nigeria (International Christian Concern) – Attacks by Fulani militants against Christian communities in Kaduna state continued leading up to Christmas. At least 18 people were killed and many others abducted in the villages of Ungwan Waziri, Gwazunu, Gbaja Katarma, Galumi, Kugosi, Gora Gan, and Kujeni Tudu. These attacks all took place within a week of Christmas, with the abduction of a reverends wife on Christmas Eve.
On Dec 17, 10 people were killed, by Fulani militants in Gora Gan village of Zangon Kataf LGA. That same day, other militants also attacked the village of Kujeni Tudu, killing one older man.
On Dec 19, Rev. Luka Dani of the Evangelical Church Winning All in Galumi village was abducted. He was later released on Dec 23. It is unclear if any ransom was paid or why he was taken at this time. He has been forced to flee his home and church though.
