06/04/2021 Archbishop Justin Welby has paid tribute to Roman Catholic Archbishop Emeritus Loro who has died at the age of 81.  The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, said today: "It is with profound sadness that I received the news of the death of Roman Catholic Archbishop Emeritus Paolino Lukudu Loro. Over the past few years, I have worked closely with Archbishop Paolino and other South Sudanese leaders on the issue of peace and reconciliation in South Sudan. I have valued his wisdom, humility and courage in all our engagements. I vividly remember his contributions at the 2019 Vatican spiritual retreat and his visit to Lambeth Palace in 2016, together with other South Sudanese leaders under the auspices of the South Sudan Council of Churches.

Daily Monitor Sunday April 04 2021 On March 8, death robbed Africa and the world of a distinguished son, the Rev Can Clement Guya Janda, who passed on in Arua City. A funeral service was held for him at Emmanuel Cathedral, Arua, on March 18 and he was buried at his ancestral home in Yei, South Sudan, on March 20. I would like to convey heartfelt condolences to Ms Joyce Janda, a Ugandan from Koboko District, and the bereaved family. May God comfort them during this difficult time and transform their sorrow into joy of Easter. Jesus Christ is risen today, alleluia! I first met Clement in Geneva, Switzerland, when he was working at the World Council of Churches. I had gone to attend a UN conference. We struck friendship from day one and as a son of an Anglican priest, it was natural for me to relate to Clement.

Notably, armed group 17 Feb abducted 42 students and school personnel in Niger state, released them 27 Feb; 26 Feb kidnapped 279 girls in Zamfara state. Amid rise in herder-farmer and intercommunal violence in south since Jan, clashes between ethnic Hausa and Fulani on one hand, and ethnic Yoruba on the other, early Feb killed two dozen people in Oyo state capital Ibadan (south west). Nobel laureate in literature Wole Soyinka 6 Feb warned situation could spiral into civil war and former President Abdulsalam Abubakar 16 Feb said it could lead to “point of no return”. In Imo state (south east), security forces stepped up operations against Eastern Security Network (ESN), paramilitary wing of outlawed secessionist group Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB); army 18 Feb deployed helicopters and hundreds of troops in Orlu and Orsu areas, razing several ESN camps; IPOB same day said govt had triggered “second Nigeria-Biafra war”. Boko Haram (BH) attacks continued in Borno state (north east) despite military operations. Army 9-10 Feb repelled insurgent attacks on base in Rann town and on Askira Uba town, killing at least 50 combatants. BH splinter group Islamic State West Africa Province 15 Feb killed at least seven soldiers in Marte area; next day launched coordinated attacks in Marte and Gubio areas, death toll unknown; 19 Feb raided several villages in Dikwa area, displacing thousands. BH rocket attack on state capital Maiduguri 23 Feb reportedly left 16 dead. Military 15 Feb said troops had killed some 80 insurgents from BH faction led by Abubakar Shekau (JAS) in “recent” operations in Sambisa forest; at least two senior JAS figures reportedly among those killed.

The appeal was made on February 22, during a commemoration of the first anniversary of the Transitional Period of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution on the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS) “We, the South Sudan Council of Churches (SSCC), the South Sudan Civil Society Forum (SSCSF) and South Sudan Women’s Coalition for Peace (SSWCP) have come together to jointly amplify the call of the citizens of South Sudan for restoration of peace, security and stability and an end to all bloodshed in our country,” the organizations  highlighted in a joint statement.
