SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. After a sixth-grade virtual assignment at Patrick Marsh Middle School put the Sun Prairie School District under scrutiny, it left many unanswered questions, but one in particular: How did this lesson plan get approved?
News 3 Now reached out to multiple district staff members throughout the day seeking answers, but the district didn’t respond to any of our messages.
One parent, who’s daughter was a part of the history class that received this assignment, sent the PowerPoint questions to News 3 Now. Students were asked to answer how they would punish someone guilty of robbery, how they would punish a wife who left her husband after arguing with him all day and how they would punish a slave who tells his master “You are not my master.” The lesson was part of an assignment teaching about Hammurabi’s Code.

SUN PRAIRIE – A group of social studies teachers have been put on administrative leave after they assigned a project to sixth grade students asking them how to punish an enslaved person. According to the Sun Prairie School District (SPSD), this was not a part of the district approved curriculum. The SPSD is conducting an investigation into the situation.
“I am glad the Sun Prairie School District responded quickly and is actively investigating the situation,” Rep.
Hebl (D- Sun Prairie) said. “However, this demonstrates how much further we have to go when it comes to addressing racial biases and racial disparities in our state and in our classrooms.”

The Sun Prairie school superintendent is apologizing for a racially insensitive lesson given to some middle school students on the first day of Black History Month, according to ABC affiliate WAOW in Wausau, Wisconsin. We are writing today to apologize for a grave error in judgment that occurred during sixth-grade social studies instruction at Patrick Marsh Middle School, Superintendent Brad Saron wrote in an email to parents.
The teachers have been placed on administrative leave while the district investigates.
A screenshot from a parent of a sixth-grade student of the assignment quickly began circulating on social media.
