Meghalaya villagers disrupt public hearing for mega-dam project
Shillong, Apr 9 (UNI) Villagers continued with their protest against the public hearing for the 240 MW Umngot Hydro-Electric project in Meghalaya for second consecutive day on Friday.
The Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MPSCB) cancelled the public hearing at Moosakhia after villagers, including tourism promoters and pressure groups leaders staged protest against the mega-dam project.
“We have to called off the public hearing as the villagers protested against the hydro project,” Deputy Commissioner of West Jaintia Hills District, Garod LSN Dykes told UNI over phone.
On Friday, villagers blocked the road towards Siangkhnai village under Mawkynrew Block in East Khasi Hills district and prevented MDPCB and government officials from holding the public hearing for the hydro electric project.
