Hurricane Sally made landfall in Gulf Shores on Sept. 16, 2020, 16 years to the day after Alabama s last hurricane landfall (Ivan). Sally wasn t the only storm to leave its mark on Alabama last year, however.

The 2021 Atlantic hurricane season will get started in just a few weeks on June 1. And it will last until Nov. 30.
Alabama had its first direct hit from a hurricane in 16 years in 2020. Category 2 Hurricane Sally made landfall near Gulf Shores on Sept. 16 with 105 mph winds and did tremendous damage along the coast and inland as well.

NEW YORK, May 11, 2021 /PRNewswire/ As 2021 National Hurricane Preparedness Week kicks off (May 9-15), insurance leader QBE North America released its Predict, Prepare and Protect Hurricane Tips for businesses. Beginning June 1, experts predict a more active season than usual. A recent report by the Colorado State University Tropical Meteorology Project calls for 17 named storms, eight hurricanes and four major hurricanes (115-plus-mph winds), making it a great time to think ahead.
Yesterday was the start of National Hurricane Preparedness Week, and Cleco is encouraging customers to use this time to prepare for the Atlantic hurricane season which officially begins June 1 and ends Nov. 30.
This initiative, led by the National Weather Service, is a nationwide effort to build a weather-ready nation before there is a storm. Each day during Hurricane Preparedness Week, the National Weather Service focuses on a different hurricane-related topic to help individuals and communities prepare. In their first forecast for the season, researchers at Colorado State University (CSU) have forecasted 17 named storms and expect eight to become hurricanes and four to become major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher). According to CSU, an average season is one with 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes.
