Chula Vista Elementary School District money on mental health

Many students still facing struggles related to the pandemic. Author: Shannon Handy (Reporter) Updated: 6:31 PM PDT July 20, 2021 CHULA VISTA, Calif. On Wednesday, nearly 30,000 kids in the Chula Vista Elementary School District will head back to campuses full time for the first time in 16 months. The district runs year-round, so it marks the start of a new year. While the first day of school is often nerve-wracking, many students are struggling with both social and emotional issues related to the pandemic. A lot of our kids have had some pretty hard things to deal with over the last 16 months,” said Elizabeth Gianulis, director of Multi-tiered System of Supports for the district.

“It’s been a long time since I went back to school, like actual school,” Mendoza said. “Very excited because I’m going to make new friends and get new teachers,” chimed in Berny Maqueo, who will begin at Eastlake Middle School on Wednesday. “I’m OK with everything, but if it would have been normal, that would have been cool,” Maqueo added. While the schools will reopen for students that wish to return to in-person learning, students will still be required to wear face masks. “I’m fine with that but the mask, if it’s hot, it’s going to be hard to breathe,” said rising sixth-grader Kyra Madrigal. “I kind of wish it was, like, back to normal. We could sit by our friends, sit by whoever we want.”
