The Drilldown: Tourmaline happy with oilpatch acquisition market

iPolitics By iPolitics. Published on Mar 12, 2021 11:38am (Gina Dittmer via Public Domain Pictures) The Lead The Canadian oilpatch acquisition market received a ringing endorsement on Thursday. Mike Rose, the CEO of Tourmaline Oil Corp., said there are still many potential acquisition targets in Western Canada but that may change if recently higher global oil prices continue to strengthen. Earlier this week, Tourmaline reported increased earnings and production over the last three months of 2020. Rose said the fourth-quarter boon has allowed the Calgary-based energy company to consider several possible acquisition deals. “I mean, if oil prices continue to run and solidify then perhaps that pipeline of opportunities slows down but right now we’re always busy evaluating and we only transact on very small proportion of the things we look at,” Rose said during a conference call to discuss fourth-quarter results.

Ford government s Hwy 413 dreams fade as another municipality pulls support

Ontario’s Peel Region pulled its support for the Ford government’s plan to build a highway through the Greenbelt on Thursday, joining a flurry of councils turning their backs on the project. The Ford government is proposing to fast-track an environmental assessment for the proposed GTA West corridor also known as Highway 413 which would connect suburbs north and west of Toronto. But with public opposition to the project heating up, nearly every municipality along its route has either yanked support or joined calls for the federal government to step in. “It just seems like now there s a little bit of pressure, dominoes are falling one by one,” said Sarah Buchanan, the clean economy program manager at the non-profit Environmental Defence, which sent an official request for Ottawa to intervene.

First Nations say Alberta review of coal project falls short, ask feds to get involved

EDMONTON Two of southern Alberta s largest First Nations have asked the federal government to step into an environmental review of a coal mine proposed for the Rocky Mountains. In a letter to federal Environment Minister Jonathan Wilkinson, the Siksika and Kainai say the review planned by Alberta s energy regulator of the Montem Resources Tent Mountain proposal falls far short. The proposed provincial review by the Alberta Energy Regulator is insufficient to appropriately identify the impacts to areas of federal jurisdiction, including on Kainai’s rights, says the letter from Chief Roy Fox. An Alberta Energy spokesman said Tuesday that Alberta maintains jurisdiction over its natural resources.
