Ottawa and the provinces are failing to adapt to climate change

iPolitics We have to shed the notion that we can “win” the battle against climate change. It will take all the effort we can muster to avert environmental catastrophe. (Arcadio Esquivel) Sound familiar?  The human coronavirus was identified more than 50 years ago, and its threat recognized with the SARS outbreak of 2002. But despite scientific warnings of an inevitable pandemic, Canadian governments were unprepared for the havoc it has caused. Are we going to repeat that mistake with climate change?  In its 2019 report on climate change, the federal government said Canada has warmed at a rate twice the global average and will continue on that trajectory. The result, it said, will be: more extreme rainfall that causes flooding of homes and businesses; more intense heat waves that worsen droughts and forest fires; and permafrost thaw that will undermine northern infrastructure.

Biden revokes Keystone XL permit in blow to Canada s oil sector

CALGARY U.S. President Joe Biden on Wednesday formally revoked the permit needed to build the Keystone XL oil pipeline (KXL), dashing Ottawa s hopes of salvaging the $8 billion project that the struggling Canadian crude sector has long supported. The move represents another set-back for the beleaguered Canadian energy industry, kills thousands of jobs and marks an early bump in Biden s relationship with Canada, a key trading partner. Biden had long promised to scrap the permit. Kirsten Hillman, Canada s ambassador to Washington, told CTV that Ottawa was very disappointed. Foreign Minister Marc Garneau, speaking minutes earlier, took a more muted tone, telling CTV that Canada respected and understood the decision.
