10 tree protectors suffering bruises, broken bones and carrying branches from the trees they tried to save will appear in the Auckland District Court at 9am tomorrow (Monday 15 March).
The 10 were arrested last Tuesday while attempting to stop the felling by developer Paul Macey of the remaining native trees at a Canal Road property in Avondale.
Four neighbouring residents of the proposed development approached
Stuff with concerns including a lack of communication about project, and – if it should be approved – the loss of productive land, a change in character of the area, increased traffic, and concern about stormwater from the development. One resident, Garry Higgins, agreed to be named. The other three wanted their names withheld. “We bought out here because it’s tranquil and close to amenities at the same time,” Higgins said. The site earmarked for development was planted in grapes. If the vines were removed and replaced with dozens of houses, the character of the area would change, Higgins said.

Eight people have been arrested as they tried to stop the felling of dozens of mature native trees at a central Auckland development site.
The group, Mana Rakaū - Save Canal Road Native Trees, has been at the Avondale site on Canal Rd since July last year in protest of the removal of the grove of 100-year-old native trees.

Today contractors felled the remaining 26 100-year-old native trees at Canal Road, Avondale. The community has been protecting the stand of trees in a tree sitting occupation for 245 days. Over 100 police and security guards were brought in to remove tree protectors and prevent the community from accessing the site. Contractors and police ignored the Aukati- Rahui placed by mana whenua. Throughout the day nine tree protectors were arrested as they attempted to save the stand.
