Collision on US 17 sends 5 to hospitals

SOUTH MILLS — Charges are pending in a three-car collision on U.S. Highway 17 in Camden County Monday that sent five people to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries, the N.C. Highway Patrol reported Tuesday. Trooper A.T. Miller said the collision happened about 3:20 p.m. when a Ford 150 truck headed south on U.S. 17 crossed the median and collided with a northbound SUV, causing that vehicle to collide with a nearby passenger vehicle also headed north. Both the SUV and the passenger vehicle left the highway on the right and came to rest off the roadway, Miller said. The pickup truck came to rest in the northbound lanes of the roadway.

On surprise notice, senior center still gives away all 450 boxes of food

An unannounced food giveaway earlier this week was more evidence of the growing hunger crisis throughout the Albemarle. In under three hours on Monday, Dec. 7, the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County Senior Center gave away 450 boxes of food to area seniors. The boxes of cheese, sausages, milk and other products were given away during an event that was originally scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 1 but had to be postponed. The event was delayed after an expected delivery to Food Bank of the Albemarle did not happen that day, the senior center’s superintendent Stacy Williams said at the time. The giveaway would be made up later, she said.
