Mandatory kindergarten to begin in Louisiana 2022

Beginning fall of 2022 children who are five years old will be required to attend kindergarten in Louisiana. Baton Rouge Senator and Senate Education Chairman Cleo Fields who authored the legislation said it makes sense to have children learning earlier to get a head start with their education. “All experts have opined that kids learn the most, or that the brain develops the most between the ages of birth and five years old. So, it just makes sense that our kids are learning at five,” said Fields. Twelve other states already require kindergarten, and the Bayou State will soon be the thirteenth pending the governor’s signature. The bill did face opposition claiming mandatory kindergarten is an infringement of parental rights. But Fields said they were able to come to an agreement with the legislation.

Louisiana Senate to debate mandatory kindergarten

Louisiana Senate to debate mandatory kindergarten  Monday, May 10, 2021 The Louisiana Senate will debate whether to require all 5-year-old children in Louisiana to receive a kindergarten education after the measure cleared a financial review today for its multimillion-dollar price tag. The Senate Finance Committee advanced the proposal, SB10, by Senate Education Chairman Cleo Fields without objection, but several senators raised concerns that suggested the bill could face difficulty winning passage from the full Senate. Currently, Louisiana children are required to attend school from the ages of 7 to 18, unless they graduate early from high school. Fields’ proposal would mandate that children who turn 5 years old by Sept. 30 of each year to attend kindergarten, starting with the 2022-23 school year. People who homeschool their children also would be required to start with kindergarten.
