WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Democratic-controlled U.S. Congress pushed ahead on Wednesday with a maneuver to pass President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package without Republican support, as the White House said it was flexible on a key element of the plan.
Biden told Democrats he would consider tighter limits on who would qualify for $1,400 checks, although he said he would not compromise on the size of the payments. That could possibly narrow the gap between his package and the $600 billion Republican proposal.
Biden has promised to work with Republicans when possible, but he is also pressing Congress to move quickly before existing benefits expire in March.

With a blanket of snow covering much of the northeast, Monday’s White House press briefing served as a warm blanket for Democrats and comfort food to the Biden team, with Press Secretary Jen Psaki taking a shot at “conservative Twitter,” reporters urging them not to compromise with and be
“ruthless” toward Republicans, and one of them wondering whether they’ve had an “easier” time with former President Trump banned from Twitter.
Psaki concluded her opening statement with what she thought was a clever take on her ingrained habit of telling reporters she’ll
“circle back” with answers to their questions, but what she actually did was prove conservatives live rent-free in her head.

WASHINGTON (AP) Donald Trump endangered the lives of all members of Congress when he aimed a mob of supporters “like a loaded cannon” at the U.S. Capitol, House Democrats said this morning in making their most detailed case yet for why the former president should be convicted and permanently barred from office.
The legal brief forcefully links Trump’s baseless efforts to overturn the results of the presidential election to the deadly Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol, saying he bears “unmistakable” blame for actions that directly threatened the underpinnings of American democracy. It argues that he must be found guilty when his impeachment trial opens before the Senate next week on a charge of inciting the siege.
