LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) Sarah Sanders, Donald Trump’s former chief spokeswoman, announced she’s running for Arkansas governor at a time other Republicans are distancing themselves from the former president facing an impeachment charge that he incited the deadly siege at the U.S. Capitol.
But the former White House press secretary, who left the job in 2019 to return to her home state, ran the other direction with an announcement Monday that embraced Trump as much as his rhetoric.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) late Monday night said he is ready to create a power-sharing agreement with Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY). An agreement was put on hold over McConnell s concerns that the filibuster – a stalling tactic that requires a 60 person vote to end debate over a piece of legislation – would be eliminated.
Two Democrats – Sens. Joe Manchin (WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (AZ) – have publicly said they would not vote in favor of nuking the filibuster.
“I do not support doing away with the filibuster under any condition. It s not who I am, Manchin told reporters previously.
Mr Trump’s legal defence team and the nine House impeachment managers, led by Maryland Democratic Congressman Jamie Raskin, will have two weeks to file their respective legal briefs and prepare for the trial, a timeline negotiated between Senate Leaders Chuck Schumer (of the Democrats) and Mitch McConnell (of the Republicans).
The House including every Democrat plus 10 Republicans voted on 13 January to impeach Mr Trump for inciting a bloody insurrection at the US Capitol just a week earlier, on 6 January, as Congress was certifying then-President-elect Joe Biden’s electoral victory.
Among those 10 Republicans was House GOP Chairwoman Liz Cheney of Wyoming, the third-ranking member of her conference behind Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Whip Steve Scalise.
