Texas Latinos worry about representation ahead of redistricting

Demographers estimate that Latinos account for more than half of Texas’ growth over the past decade, but Democratic lawmakers and organizers worry that a census undercount could result in less representation and federal dollars for the community. Last month s initial release of state population counts brought Texas two additional U.S. House seats one fewer than many experts had predicted  and suggested that a significant number of people were never counted. Legislative mapmakers are awaiting more detailed population data before they begin the tedious and contentious work of redrawing political boundaries and, in the case of the U.S. House map, squeezing in two new districts. That work is expected to begin in earnest during a special legislative session in the fall.

Texas has one of the largest Muslim populations in the country, but not one of the state s more than 180 state lawmakers identifies as Muslim. That s motivated organizations like EMGAGE Texas, to make sure Muslim voices are heard all levels of state government. Nabila Mansoor lives in Fort Bend County, near Houston. She is the executive director of EMGAGE Texas. “EMGAGE is a civic engagement organization that is primarily dealing with ensuring that the Muslim American community is civically engaged in such a way that they know about elections and they know how important elections are,” Mansoor said.

With Texas legislators poised to redraw the state s political maps this year, many Texans have asked how to get involved in the complicated and contentious process that determines their political districts and representation for as long as 10 years. While legislators wait for delayed census data to arrive, they’re gathering public input . Though the public’s suggestions for how to group districts don’t always impact how maps are drawn, records of that input can be pulled into the eventual court record to show whether a committee disregarded the public’s recommendations when there are concerns about the legality of maps.
