McConnell: It never occurred to me convincing Americans to get vaccinated would be difficult

“Here, we did developed three highly effective vaccines in under one year. Honestly, it never occurred to me we would have difficulty getting people to take the vaccine,” McConnell told Fox Business Network host Larry Kudlow, a former White House official. “So, clearly, we have got a job to do to try to convince reluctant Americans of all types who seem to be holding back, unconvinced that this is the right thing to do,” McConnell added. ADVERTISEMENT McConnell said that the subject of vaccines hits close to home for him as a polio survivor, noting it took decades to develop vaccines for it.

The Readers Forum: Thursday letters

Striking testimony My heart went out to the Capitol Police officers who testified (under oath, I might add) about the attempted coup on Jan. 6 at the Capitol. Everything they said verified the videos we’ve seen of the violence and hatred unleashed against them by Trump supporters (“Police tell Jan. 6 stories,” July 29). And the aftermath — most striking was the testimony of Officer Michael Fanone of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department: “What makes the struggle harder and more painful, is to know so many of . the people I put my life at risk to defend are downplaying or outright denying what happened. I went to hell and back to protect them . but too many are now telling me that hell doesn’t exist or that hell actually wasn’t that bad.

Senate advances $1 2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure deal after last-minute wrangling

Print this article The Senate voted to advance a $1.2 trillion infrastructure package after weeks of stalled efforts to reach a bipartisan deal. Enough Republicans joined Democrats to achieve the 60-vote threshold needed to start debate. The vote was 67-32. Lawmakers will now begin considering amendments. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the White House, and a bipartisan group of senators announced the accord earlier Wednesday. We’ve made a lot of progress so far on an historic investment in our nation’s core infrastructure that will be fully paid for without raising taxes, Indiana Republican Sen. Todd Young said in a statement after the vote. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle as we sand and polish the final product.

Senate moves forward with Sinema-led $1 2 trillion infrastructure plan

View Comments The U.S. Senate narrowly voted Wednesday to move forward with a massive bipartisan infrastructure deal after co-negotiators Sen. Kyrsten Sinema and Sen. Rob Portman broke through a weeks-long impasse on the $1.2 trillion package. The evenly divided 100-member Senate voted 67-32 to proceed with the package, with 17 Republicans joining Democrats to start considering the legislation a week after it failed to muster enough votes before Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. forced a vote. The legislation, if it becomes law, would make significant improvements to the nation’s roads, bridges, transit, water systems, power grids, broadband access, airports and other public infrastructure.
