Senate Democrats complained Wednesday that Senate Republicans are holding the economy and the debt limit “hostage.”
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said Tuesday that Republicans will not support raising the debt ceiling, a move that could grind Democrats’ infrastructure push to a halt. The debt ceiling expires at the end of July, meaning that the Democrat majority will first have to tackle the debt limit before trying to pass trillions of dollars of infrastructure and social spending.
McConnell’s hard line tactics have infuriated Democrats.
Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden (D-OR) said Wednesday, “Nobody is going to hold the American economy hostage, period, full stop.”

The political circus over the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol building continues to get zanier, Republicans seem to be more willing to throw their weight around. During a Wednesday briefing at Capitol Hill, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) declared that the GOP will launch its own investigation into the incident, after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) pulled two Republican lawmakers from the supposedly bipartisan committee.
McCarthy’s threat comes after Democrats decided to form their own committee to “investigate” the riot, when it became apparent that they did not have enough support for a 9/11-style commission to look into the matter. We may have walked on the Moon and sent probes across the solar system, but we know very little about what s going on inside other planets. Now, for the first time, we have been able to view the interior of one, thanks to Nasa s Mars InSight probe. The probe, which landed in 2018, is equipped with a solar-powered lander bristling with equipment, including a seismometer (a very sensitive vibration detector).
The results, published in three studies in Science, throw up some unexpected findings about Mars s interior, including a very large core.
Though Mars has no tectonic plates, the first “marsquakes were detected within months of the probe landing. These may result from vibrations caused by meteorites hitting the surface or from processes inside the planet.

There s something new in the air, and it s not just the Delta variant.
Now that the pandemic is isolated mostly to those who won t get the vaccine, and vaccination rates lag particularly in red states, Republican governors who raced to pander to personal freedom and enact bans on mask and vaccine requirements are pushing their citizens to get the shot as Covid rates rise and their states hospitals fill up.
