As New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo tried to return to the business of governing Monday, one of his sexual harassment accusers met via Zoom for more than four hours w

Legislature Looks to Increase Taxes on the Wealthy

PUBLISHED 8:32 PM ET Mar. 15, 2021 PUBLISHED 8:32 PM EDT Mar. 15, 2021 SHARE The NYS Senate and Assembly passed their one house budgets on Monday, each proposing more than $200 billion in spending. These one house budgets will not be finalized as is, but if enacted would be one of the largest spending plans in New York’s history.  To put it in perspective, California’s state budget for 2020-2021 was $202.1 billion and California has nearly double the population. In contrast, Governor Andrew Cuomo’s budget proposal outlines $178 billion in spending. At the same time, despite slight differences, the Senate and Assembly budget proposals are very similar, potentially giving Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins more bargaining power in the budget process when they go into a (perhaps virtual) room with Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Cuomo Accuser Speaks to Investigators; Poll Shows NYers Oppose Resignation

As one of Cuomo s accusers spoke with investigators for hours on Monday, a new poll was released showing more than half of New York voters say they don t want to see the governor resign, even as his list of political allies grows thin. NBC New York s Jonathan Dienst reports. “The investigators have been moving quickly, and with sensitivity, to get to the heart of these allegations,” Katz said. “We remain confident that their investigation will substantiate Charlotte’s claims of sexual harassment against Gov. Cuomo, as well as the failure of his senior staff to meet their mandatory reporting requirements under the very laws he signed.”

New York lawmakers propose tax increases for rich Who would be affected

ALBANY - State lawmakers are moving forward with plans to increase income taxes on wealthy New Yorkers to help fund record spending increases on education, the environment and the economy amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The state Senate late Monday passed its one-house budget resolution for the fiscal year that starts April 1. It would hike taxes on those earning more than $1 million in a bid to raise $4 billion for the state s coffers. The Assembly is expected to pass a similar plan this week, and then the sides then will negotiate a budget with Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Whether the tax plan becomes law is uncertain, but the Democrat-controlled Legislature is staking out its position and expects to exert its influence on the budget process with a Democratic governor weakened by two scandals, calls for his resignation and threats of impeachment.
