Survivors of abuse “stormed out” of a Tuesday meeting with Pennsylvania Senate Majority Leader Kim Ward about a bill to give victims more time to sue their abusers, while Ward’s spokeswoman said some survivors threw props at the senator before leaving.
Jillian Ruck, the executive director of the advocacy organization Child USA, told the USA TODAY Network Pennsylvania State Capital Bureau that the survivors who met with Ward grew increasingly frustrated in three minutes of speaking with the majority leader.
“It did not go well, and the survivors stormed out,” Ruck said.
The tense meeting reflected the growing discontent over whether Pennsylvania will pass a law to give those abused the right to sue their accusers after a constitutional amendment failed to get on this year s ballot due a clerical error.

Governor Tom Wolf renews disaster declaration as General Assembly receives new powers to dismantle it

Gov. Tom Wolf renewed the state’s 90-day Proclamation of Disaster Emergency on Thursday for the fifth time since the pandemic began last year.
The renewed proclamation comes just two days after Pennsylvanians voted to limit gubernatorial disaster emergency declaration powers through two ballot questions on Pennsylvania’s primary election day.
The Wolf administration still plans to lift all mitigation measures on Memorial Day, but needs more time under the current disaster declaration, Wolf said in a press release on Thursday.

For more than 13 months, Wolf largely acted alone in issuing socioeconomic coronavirus restrictions under his emergency powers, as well as via the state s 1955 Disease Prevention and Control Act, which irked the legislature and many Pennsylvania businessowners affected by the lockdowns and the at-times abrupt nature of new, additional restrictions.
The first new amendment essentially provides the legislature the ability to end emergency declarations by majority vote, while the second requires the governor to return to the legislature to seek renewal of emergency orders at the 21-day mark.
